About Me
I'm a full-time professional tutor with over 14 years of experience, specialising in GCSE and A-Level Maths and Economics. I hold a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where my research focused on modelling and optimising the educational development of young adults — work that still shapes my tutoring today.
Before tutoring full-time, I worked in a specialised educational setting supporting young people recently released from custodial care. That experience taught me just how important it is to remove the emotional and structural barriers that often hold students back. It also deepened my belief in the value of mentorship — particularly for young boys navigating challenges without strong role models at home. Since then, I've worked with students from a wide range of schools and backgrounds, helping them not just raise their grades, but also grow in confidence and independence.
Outside of education, I'm a keen sportsperson and former elite rower. I won the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race in 2019 and represented Great Britain at international level. Many of the students I’ve supported over the years are also talented athletes, and I enjoy helping them balance academic demands with their wider ambitions. I've been invited to speak on several podcasts about how to manage high-level academics alongside elite athletic performance — a topic I care deeply about, both professionally and personally.
“Dave has excellent organisational skills, his knowledge is outstanding, his ability to communicate concepts is exceptional. I really cannot recommend him highly enough.” — Jacqui

Tutoring Experience
Tutoring has been my full-time job since 2010, with over 14,000 hours of one-to-one teaching delivered. I’ve worked with 200+ students, covering everything from 11+ entrance exams through to undergraduate and postgraduate Economics at top UK universities.
While my core focus is now GCSE and A-Level Maths and Economics, I’ve supported students from a wide range of schools — including state, grammar, and independent sectors — as well as those preparing for Oxbridge, resits, and university interviews. I’ve also taught internationally at summer programmes such as the Oxford Royale Academy, and many of my students have gone on to study at Cambridge, Oxford, and Russell Group universities.
“Without the energy and direction of Dave, my son's Economics AS grade would have been a disaster like his other non-tutored subjects. Dave inspired my son and gave him the necessary clear guidance needed to secure a strong grade. The real unexpected bonus for us has been our son's interest in the subject and consequent engagement in on-going study. The benefits have been manifold and I could not recommend Dave highly enough for either an academic or struggling student. It may be worth noting that I am maths teacher so know what I am looking for in terms of the teaching gift - and Dave has that gift.” — Peter
“Thank you for the help you gave our daughter. She was struggling with her GCSE maths and ended up with taking the exam early and getting an A grade. She is now starting Maths A Level.” — Siobhan
Tutoring Approach
My teaching approach is shaped by both academic rigour and insights from my PhD in educational development, where I modelled how four key traits interact to influence student success:
Self-efficacy – belief that efforts will yield positive outcomes
Self-concept – how students perceive themselves as learners
Growth mindset – understanding that ability is malleable, not innate
Self-regulation – the ability to develop and execute effective habits in the face of academic challenge
My research focused on how these elements combine dynamically, and how specific educational interventions can shift not just short-term performance, but long-term attitude toward learning.
That’s the foundation of how I teach today. I don’t just help students raise grades — I work to build confidence, intellectual curiosity, and a sense of control over their own development.
In Maths, I structure lessons around a logical syllabus sequence that builds fluency over time. In Economics, I encourage students to move beyond surface-level diagrams and explore the why behind them — often drawing on their Maths knowledge to make deeper conceptual links.
Lessons are interactive and tailored. I frequently ask students to explain ideas aloud, which helps consolidate their understanding and gives me real-time feedback to adjust the pace and difficulty level. This keeps them working in their Zone of Proximal Development — that academic sweet spot where content is challenging enough to raise standards, but not so far out of reach that students cannot engage with it.

Ultimately, I want students to leave my sessions not just knowing more, but feeling empowered to drive their own learning — with the mindset and tools to keep growing long after the tutoring ends.
“Dave is a teacher's teacher. His enthusiasm for math and helping students understand math is infectious. My daughter is doing much better in her AP Stats class as a result of Dave's help. He is organized, punctual, and does an excellent job getting the concepts across.” — Julia
“Dave not only reignited my son's interest in A Level Maths but most importantly rebuilt his confidence in the subject. Despite the unprecedented chaos of 2020 my son achieved a well deserved Grade A. This is a truly and outstanding achievement as my son’s prior performance in pre-mock examinations was C/D. If you are looking for a turnaround approach then look no further than Dave.” — Mark
