A few words from founder of Eigenstate Tuition, Dave Bell

I am a full-time professional mathematics and economics tutor, with a near perfect record for assisting students to A/A* grades. I earned my PhD at Cambridge, in which I developed a new method for modelling and optimising the educational development of young adults - a method I have carefully woven into my role as a private tutor. As such, I pride myself on not only targeting top grades for everyone I work with, but also on helping my students become well-rounded, organised, and resilient learners who are able to cope with the demands of higher education and beyond.

My philosophy towards education is to consider the students' attitude toward education as a dynamical system, and identify the variable which can act as a catalyst to shifting this attitude towards being a resilient, self-regulating learner with a deep appreciation for their topic.

Or, in slightly nerdier terminology, I look to change their eigenstate, not just their grades.

So, what exactly do we mean by dynamical systems and eigenstates?

A dynamical system is a concept in mathematics used to describe the state of the variables in the system, when all the variables are continuously affecting each other.

The most straightforward example I give to my students is a hypothetical island inhabited only by rabbits and wolves. When there are more rabbits they reproduce faster, but this provides more food for the wolves, who then reproduce faster, eating more rabbits, driving down the rabbit population, running low on food, and once the wolves begin to die out the rabbits can start to multiply more rapidly once more.

The whole thing creates a loop, where the variables are the number of rabbits and the number of wolves. These variables continuously affect both themselves and each other, and the behaviour of these populations is called a dynamical system.

This leads us onto eigenstates. We use eigenstates to describe the long-term equilibrium of dynamical systems: for instance, will the behaviour of the variables settle down to something more predictable? While studying for my MPhil and PhD I investigated the idea that behavioural traits used in education (for example, self-efficacy, growth mindset, self-regulation, self-concept, learning motivation) were themselves a dynamical system, and the students’ educational personality was the eigenstate of that dynamical system.

... and how does all of the above relate to studying?

It's all about changing attitudes to learning to engender more positive mindsets... and outcomes!

As learners, and as people, we are all susceptible to falling into repeated patterns of behaviour, of thought, of action (and oftentimes inaction). Human beings, after all, are habitual creatures! These repeated patterns, these fixed beliefs, these eigenstates, can work for us or against us, and a lot of that has to do with one's educational personality.

A learner's educational personality is very much informed by their experience of education. Negative experiences can lead to a mindset that is not conducive to effective, independent learning. The pupil quickly learns to adopt coping mechanisms or may settle into the belief that only one way is the right way. For example, some students love learning and persevere through any setback, whereas others feel trapped in a loop of rote-memorisation with the sole aim of achieving grades.

The purpose of Eigenstate Tuition is to change such mindsets for the better - and in the process, produce confident and driven learners who are instilled with the inherent tools they need to learn and develop. And not only that: our students will experience greater fulfilment from the learning process as a whole. What better incentive could there be to study and progress?

A LITTLE BACKGROUND ON PROPRIETOR DAVE BELL

Private tuition has been my job for more than 12 years at the time of writing. When I first started, it was a flexible job fitted around my competitive sports career; now it is a full-time job where I pride myself on achieving the highest results possible. I started Eigenstate Tuition to pass on the skills and methods I have developed to talented tutors in the Surrey area.

Before becoming a tutor, I worked in a centre designed for students recently released from young offenders' institutions. This job taught me the importance of identifying what held students back and creating an environment where they could not only ask syllabus related questions, but also freely discuss their goals and concerns for the future.

Since becoming a tutor, I have taught everything from 11+ Maths to Cambridge University Postgraduate Economics. Though most of my work has been one on one, I have also taught at several Summer School programmes, such as the Oxford Royale Academy. Over time, my speciality has become GCSE and A-Level content.

Outside of tuition, I am a keen sportsperson, having represented Great Britain at World Championship level, and also won the 2019 Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race.

Having stepped back from elite rowing, I now compete as a cyclist and CrossFit enthusiast. Throughout my tuition career I have mentored many talented young athletes alongside supporting their educational development.

Feedback from the parents

“If I could rate 'Excellent Star' I would for Dave Bell. He started tutoring my son in economics in his final year of A-Levels when we realised that a year of COVID disruption and college teaching, one week in class followed by one week via zoom, were failing his chances of good results. He soon took up tutoring my son in maths as well. He built my son's confidence and understanding in two complex and notoriously difficult A-Level subjects.

Dave also arranged for no-cost group sessions practising questions on the weekends during the examination season. He maximised the time for learning by following detailed timetables during the final year … and it worked. Dave has helped my son achieve grades this time last year he never thought he would see and to secure a place in his first-choice university. Thank you so much.”
